Can I use Blackberry with just generic data plan (without Blackberry Internet Service)?
Article
The answer is "It depends".
If your carrier is CDMA (such as Verizon, Alltel and Sprint), the answer is no. You must subscribe Blackberry Internet Service (BIS); otherwise, the carrier will not even activate the unit.
If your carrier is GSM or iDen (such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Nextel), the answer is yes. While you cannot use Blackberry-branded software, you can use many free third-party application for the same purposes.
For example, you may use:
- "Opera Mini" or "Bolt" for Web browsing
- IM+ for texting
- GMAIL Mobile for emails
- Google Maps Mobile for mapping
Most third-party applications can be installed over Blackberry Desktop Manager or their own desktop installers.
